In September 2009, Sylvia L. Strobel, Senior Partner at Lehmann Strobel PLC, agreed to serve temporarily as Interim President while American Women in Radio and Television (AWRT) undertakes a national search for its next executive leader. Strobel has been involved in the organization for over a decade, as a national board member and most recently as Chair. “It has been an incredible opportunity to work internally with AWRT at a time when the media landscape is changing to radically” explained Strobel. “I have a greater appreciation of both the challenges and opportunities facing AWRT – I look forward to putting this knowledge to use when I return to my role as Chair in March.”

Walter G. Lehmann, a partner at Lehmann Strobel PLC, offered a new perspective on the ethics of museum acquisitions of “appropriation art” at the Institute of Museum Ethics first Graduate Student conference “New Directions in Museum Ethics” which was held November 14, 2009 at Seton Hall University. Lehmann discussed the legal and ethical implications for museums of acquiring and displaying works such as the Obama HOPE portrait by appropriation artist Shepard Fairey which may violate the intellectual property rights of others. “I was honored to be part of this historic conference on the new discipline of museum ethics. It was truly an invigorating experience.” Lehmann’s presentation was titled “The Appropriateness of Appropriating Appropriation Art”. A copy of text of the presentation is posted in the Museum section of our website.
Walter G. Lehmann, Managing Partner at Lehmann Strobel PLC, has completed his Masters in Museum Studies at George Washington University. The Masters program, one of the oldest and most respected in the country, was established by distinguished museum lawyer Marie C. Malaro and was until recently directed by former advisor to the Smithsonian Institution, Ildiko DeAngelis. Lehmann was inspired to begin the program after meeting DeAngelis at a museum law conference. “It has taken 3 years and over 40,000 miles, but the experience has been extremely rewarding” says Lehmann. The 45 credit program involved a variety of classes in museum administration and management as well as two internships – one with Barbara Franco, Director of the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission, and the other with Dr. Gary Vikan at the Walters Art Museum. “I suppose the real question is what do I do now with all my free time?” muses Lehmann. We are sure he will think of something.
