LEHMANN PRESENTS AT STATEWIDE MUSUEM CONFERENCE
Managing partner Walter G. Lehmann presented a seminar entitled “ABCs and XYZs of IP (and some Q&A) at the 2008 Statewide Museum Conference. The conference, which was organized by the Pennsylvania Federation of Museums and Historical Organizations in partnership with the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission and the Western Pennsylvania Museum Council, was held in Pittsburgh April 13-15. Lehmann gave an overview of intellectual property concepts and then encouraged a discussion of how these concepts apply to the day-to-day operations of museums. Lehmann explained that museums are creating and using intellectual property every day in many ways, and that a basic understanding of these concepts is essential to protect the museum’s interest in its own property, to respect the interests of other intellectual property owners, and to avoid liability. Lehmann also stressed that the management of intellectual property in the museum context must be mission-driven. “This means understanding the basic tension between protecting your intellectual property rights and allowing others to use those objects you hold in trust for the public.” For more information on how to manage your museum’s intellectual property rights, contact Walter G.
